MARPOL 73/78 requires ships to be fitted with certain pollution prevention equipment (PPE), including oil filtering equipment, oil content meters, oil/water interface detectors and sewage treatment plants. The requirements of the MARPOL Convention are that all oil tankers with a gross tonnage of 150 GRT and above must have an oil discharge monitoring and control system installed, incorporating an approved oil content meter, with a starting interlock and an automatic overboard valve control system.
Oil discharge monitoring equipments being installed onto oil tankers with keels laid on or after January 1,2005 must be tested in accordance with MEPC.108(49) and issued with a type approval certificate by or on behalf of an approved administration

Nozzle movement is fully controlled by the integrated turbine driven control unit, which controls both the vertical pitch and rotation speed.
Nozzle movement is, in principle, a controlled rotation in the horizontal plane, combined with a slow, controlled vertical movement. This means that the nozzle performs helical patterns.
